Journey Through the Mystical World of Black Myth: Wukong

How I Finally Beat Yellowbrow in Black Myth: Wukong Without Losing My Mind

Beat Black Myth Wukong's Yellowbrow boss in New Thunderclap Temple with shock resistance, Cloud Step, and stun combos.

I finally understand why the New West has a ‘new’ in its name: it is where old nightmares get reupholstered into a giant lightning-obsessed monk named Yellowbrow. After carving through dragons, bugs, and enough bats to fill a goth wedding, I expected Chapter 3’s final boss to be some feral horror. Instead, I got a serene-looking giant who hits like a freight train wrapped in a thundercloud. The fight is a three-act fever dream with checkpoints, so at least I did not have to replay the whole circus every time I got smacked into next week.

Yellowbrow lives at the very end of Mahavira Hall in the New Thunderclap Temple. Before knocking on his door, I did a little housekeeping: there is an optional boss called Non-Pure in a building to the right of the hall. I fought him too, because at this point I was hoarding XP and Sparks like a squirrel preparing for a lightning-flavoured winter. Trust me, every extra skill point helps when a giant monk starts treating the floor like an electric skillet.

Much like Captain Wise-Voice, Yellowbrow loves lightning attacks that can inflict Shock. I loaded up on Shock-Quelling Powder, boosted my shock resistance with better armour, and traded in some Mind Cores with the Xu Dog from Chapter 2. For spells, I swapped Rock Solid for Cloud Step. Yellowbrow is more of a magical bully than a physical bruiser, so I also redistributed Spark points to make Cloud Step’s opening critical hit hit harder. Think of Cloud Step as a ‘get out of jail free’ card that also lets you bonk him on the head for free.

First encounter: weirdly, this is the easiest phase. Yellowbrow is a giant monk, but he moves with the urgency of a sleepy glacier. His sceptre swings and foot stomps are slow enough to dodge, but every attack is marinated in lightning, so getting clipped builds up Shock. I used Immobilize while he was mid-swing, summoned Wandering Wight’s spirit attack to stun him, and popped Wind Tamer for a temporary defence boost. For any attack timing I wasn’t sure about, Cloud Step let me vanish, then reappear with a critical counter that often stunned him out of his attack.

Focus on full combos and focused heavy attacks - they can interrupt him faster than a toddler interrupting a phone call. He will occasionally teleport away just to stand there and taunt you, which is basically him saying ‘please hit me while I pose’. So I did. When his health dropped to about a third, he started charging the floor with lightning AOE and sending electric trails my way. My cue to leave the area was the moment the floor looked like a disco run by a mad electrician. When he raised his sceptre in the air to charge a big lightning attack, I rushed in with a full light attack combo or a focused heavy to stun him out of it. Phase one ended without too much sweat, which was nice because a cutscene then stuffed me into his jar.

Next, I had to fight Macaque Chief again, but this time Zhu Bajie joined the party. This is a checkpoint, so if you die here, you respawn at the Mahavira Hall shrine and do not have to fight Yellowbrow’s first phase again. Once the monkey business was over, I dropped deeper into the temple and eventually found Yellowbrow in his second, much more annoying phase.

Second encounter: Yellowbrow’s new party trick is turning himself into gold - a walking gilded piggy bank that only accepts deposits of charged heavy hits. In this golden state, normal attacks just bounce off him like pebbles off a tank. He also grows bigger and charges his sceptre with lightning, then releases shockwaves that shoot along the ground. To knock him out of gold, I charged up focus heavy attacks (any stance works); a few solid hits staggered him and reverted him to normal, leaving him open for a free combo.

When about a third of his health was gone, he roared, stunned me, and plunged his sceptre into the ground. Then a cutscene hit me with a devastating attack that felt like being mugged by the script itself. It left me with a single pixel of health, but luckily it cannot kill you. I skipped the cutscene on replays and healed immediately. The fight then looped: he teleported around, swung his lightning sceptre, and periodically went gold again, so I had to keep breaking him out of his shiny armour before doing any real damage.

When he was down to the last third, another roaring shockwave and another unfair cutscene took a huge chunk of my health. I had to heal again, then face the final phase. This last stretch is similar to the first fight: he can charge a huge lightning blast unless I dealt enough damage to stagger him, and he can do this in gold form too, which is extra annoying. I saved Wandering Wight’s spirit attack for this moment - one transformation attack knocked him straight out of gold form. Wind Tamer boosted my defence, and Rock Guai transformation absorbed attacks while quickly charging its special move. I dodged the lightning, used Shock-Quelling Powder when needed, and exploited every opening with Immobilize and Cloud Step.

After enough patience, Yellowbrow finally went down. Chapter 3 ended, and I received the third Relic, Hubris Nose, with three buff options:

Relic Option Effect
Lingering Aroma Buffs damage shortly after casting a spell
In One Breath Charges up to 4 Focus Points when you are in the Ring of Fire spell
Hold Breath Extends dodge invincibility duration

I also got a pile of goodies: 4330 XP, 2267 Will, 1x Cosmo Radiance, 1x Gold Tree Core, 2x Refined Iron Sand, 2x Fine Gold Thread, 3x Cold Iron Leaves, and 1x Mind Core.

And just like that, I was halfway through the Destined One’s journey. Yellowbrow might have been a gilded pain in the jar, but he taught me one thing: never trust a monk who looks like he just stepped out of a lightning-themed car wash. On to Chapter 4 I go, with slightly fewer healing gourds and a much deeper respect for focus attacks.
